Holiday sketches

Last week I got back from a week and a half in Scotland where I managed to do a bit of sketching. My friend Katie Green (who is a fantastic illustrator/writer/zine-maker) accompanied me for most of the trip. We rented a cottage on Skye and had a week of unexpectedly good weather, walking and lamb/calf/bird-spotting. There was also a lot of shopping for wool, knitting, board games… and Katie even braved the icy sea at one point for a short but valiant swim.

One of my favourite moments on the trip was a short walk we did at Rubha Phoil forest gardens. The route was punctuated with little signs pointing out things of interest, sitting areas and areas for playing. We came across a series of rope swings and all had a go, including my mum. In another amazing moment a golden eagle swooped low over our cottage garden on the first evening as we were cooking our dinner. We also did an adventurous hike that involved taking a boat into the heart of the imposing Cuillin mountains, then walking around a long loch over rocky and boggy terrain. We then had to make it back in time to catch the last boat out of the mountains or risk having a search-and-rescue operation launched in our honour. There was a twisted ankle and some sinking into mud and some fighting-off of insects, but it was a really stunning hike and well worth the effort!

I would visit the Sleat Peninsula on Skye again in a heartbeat – it’s a really stunning area.
